According to officials, a special expert panel and the UGC have recommended not to confer the Institute of Eminence (IoE) tag to Jadavpur University and Jamia Hamdard University, which were shortlisted by the central government for the status of prestigious institutions.

Apart from this, the Tamil Nadu government has withdrawn its proposal to confer the IoE tag to Anna University.

The Ministry of Education has not yet considered the recommendations of the empowered expert committee (EEC) and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Jadavpur University, a state public university, initially proposed a budget of INR 3,299 crore under the plan. Later, the ministry sought financial commitment from the West Bengal government for its share of funds, as the plan includes provision of funding up to INR 1,000 crore for proposed expenditures and ensures financial commitment for ongoing plan implementations,” said a senior officer associated with the development.

However, the West Bengal government did not agree to it and revised the proposal, first to INR 1,015 crore and then further to INR 606 crore, of which 25% of the amount will be generated by the university at its level. Considering the significant reduction in the budget outlay, the matter was sent for fresh examination by UGC and AICTE, which recommended against considering the university for the IoE status to the Ministry of Education.
